About the Malaysian Ringgit.
Where it comes from
Malaysia introduced the ringgit on 12 June 1967, replacing the Malaya and British Borneo dollar at par. Officially it was still called the dollar until 1975, when ringgit and sen became the only official names. Bank Negara Malaysia, the central bank, issues it.
Good to know
Ringgit means jagged in Malay, a nod to the serrated edges of the Spanish pieces of eight that once circulated across the region. After the 1997 Asian crisis, Malaysia pegged the currency at 3.80 to the US dollar in 1998, a fix that held until July 2005.
