Romania adopted the leu on 22 April 1867. The name means lion and comes from the Dutch leeuwendaalder, a lion-stamped thaler that circulated so widely it also named the currencies of Moldova and Bulgaria. The National Bank of Romania issues it; today's RON arrived with a 2005 redenomination.
