South Africa introduced the rand in 1961, three months before declaring itself a republic, replacing the pound at two rand per pound. The name comes from the Witwatersrand, the gold-bearing ridge Johannesburg sits on (rand is Afrikaans for ridge). The South African Reserve Bank issues it.

The Central Bank of Brazil introduced the real on 1 July 1994, replacing the cruzeiro real at 2,750 to one as part of the Plano Real stabilisation plan. Hyperinflation had burned through Brazil's money names; the real was the country's fifth currency in just eight years.
