Where it comes from
The State Bank of Vietnam issues the đồng. The name dates to 1946, when the Viet Minh replaced the French Indochinese piastre in the north, but today's unified đồng arrived on 3 May 1978, three years after reunification, merging the northern đồng and the south's liberation đồng.
Good to know
A 1985 revaluation swapped ten old đồng for one new one, then inflation hit 700 percent the next year and the zeros never came back. One US dollar now buys around 26,000 đồng, and since 2003 notes of 10,000 and above have been printed on polymer plastic.
