Ukraine's National Bank put the hryvnia into circulation in September 1996, exchanging it for the interim karbovanets at 100,000 to one. The name revives a monetary unit of medieval Kyivan Rus, and the ₴ symbol is a cursive Ukrainian letter He crossed with two strokes.

Hungary's forint, issued by the Hungarian National Bank, arrived on 1 August 1946 to replace the pengő, which hyperinflation had made worthless. The name is much older, borrowed from Florence's fiorino d'oro gold coin, a model Hungarian kings had copied since 1325.
