Norway swapped the old speciedaler for the krone in 1875, at four kroner per speciedaler, joining the gold-based Scandinavian Monetary Union that Sweden and Denmark had formed two years earlier. Norges Bank issues it, and it outlived the union, which broke down around World War I.

Iceland adopted the króna in 1874, replacing the Danish rigsdaler while the island was still under Danish rule. The Central Bank of Iceland issues it today. The modern króna dates to 1981, when inflation forced a revaluation that swapped 100 old krónur for one new one.
