Where it comes from
Japan adopted the yen in 1871 under the Meiji government's New Currency Act, replacing the Edo era's tangle of clan-issued notes and shogunate coinage with one decimal currency. The word yen means round. The Bank of Japan, established in 1882, has issued the notes ever since.
Good to know
Two Japanese coins, the 5 and 50 yen, have holes through the middle, for different reasons. The 5 yen's hole saves brass. The 50 yen got its hole in 1959 because shoppers kept mixing it up with the similar-looking 100 yen coin in busy shops.
