Where it comes from
Ghana's cedi takes its name from the Akan word for cowry, the shell once used as money along the coast. The Bank of Ghana first issued it in 1965 to replace the Ghanaian pound; today's version dates from a 2007 redenomination.
Good to know
Few currencies swing like the cedi. After sliding to 16.4 per dollar in November 2024, it gained nearly 50 percent in 2025 and topped Bloomberg's global rankings, lifted by record gold exports. The 2007 redenomination had already cut four zeros, turning 10,000 old cedis into one new one.
