Sterling is the oldest currency still in use, with a history stretching back over 1,200 years. The Bank of England, founded in 1694 and the issuer of its banknotes ever since, is the world's second oldest central bank. The name comes from a pound weight of silver.
Good to know
Until 1971, a pound was 240 pence, split into 20 shillings of 12 pence each, a system with roots in Roman coinage. On Decimal Day, 15 February 1971, Britain switched overnight to 100 new pence per pound and retired the shilling.
