About the Egyptian Pound.
Where it comes from
Issued today by the Central Bank of Egypt, the pound dates to an 1834 law that set up a gold and silver coinage, and it displaced the piastre as the chief unit when Egypt adopted the gold standard in 1885. The piastre survives as a hundredth of a pound.
Good to know
Arabic speakers call it the gineih, a name generally traced to the British guinea. By the end of the nineteenth century that gold coin was worth about the same as 100 piastres, one Egyptian pound, and the borrowed name never left.
