The Bank of Algeria launched the dinar on 1 April 1964, two years after independence, replacing the Algerian new franc at par. Its name traces back to the Roman denarius, while the centime subunit was inherited from 132 years of French rule.

Bank Al-Maghrib, Morocco's central bank, introduced the dirham in 1960, a few years after independence from France. It replaced the Moroccan franc, which did not vanish overnight: francs kept circulating alongside the new money until 1974, at 100 francs to the dirham.
