About the UAE Dirham.
Where it comes from
The dirham arrived on 19 May 1973, less than two years after the UAE formed. It replaced the Qatar and Dubai riyal at par in most emirates and the Bahraini dinar in Abu Dhabi, and has been issued by the Central Bank of the UAE since 1980.
Good to know
Its name is older than the country by well over a millennium. Dirham comes from the Greek drachma, a coin that reached Arabia through pre-Islamic trade with the Byzantine world. The modern version has been fixed at 3.6725 to the US dollar since November 1997.
